Pit und ich durften anlässlich des diesjährigen Auftritts der Melodic Black-Metal Band NAGLFAR auf dem Party.San Festival 2019 ein paar Fragen an Kristoffer „Wrath“ Olivius, dem Sänger der Band stellen und bekamen interessante Einblicke zur Band, dem geplanten neuen Album, aus Kristoffer‘s Privatleben und was mit Bewitched geplant ist. Petra: We hope you are doing fine?
Kristoffer: Yes, thank you very much!
Petra: I think in 2012 it was the last time you played here at the Party.San Festival…
Kristoffer: Das stimmt!
Petra: You are speaking German??
Kristoffer: Of course, I do, but I am not going to speak German now…
Petra: 2012 is a long time ago. We would like to know, what you did in the meantime. A couple of years one did not hear anything from NAGLFAR. Last year I think you started to do some shows in Germany again.
Kristoffer: Well, you know, in 2012 the world was predicted, that the world would change or that something special would happen in that year, nobody really knew, what was going to happen, because of this old prophecies and stuff like that. And actually, something happened to me in 2012 and that was, that I got my first child. I decided, because I never grew up with my parents, that I am going to take care of them for a couple of years. So, I stepped back from the metal scene a little bit. Then we started to do shows again, but this was in a way intentionally for us, because there are so many festivals in Germany and there are so many bands, playing all the time and we just never wanted to be like one of them. We do NAGLFAR not for money, but we still like it so much.
Petra: Do you have a profession in your everyday life? Are you working?
Kristoffer: Of course, everyone in our band works.
Petra: So, NAGLFAR on weekends and in your holidays?
Kristoffer: Yes, we do that and we cannot do it, so we decided that we never will tour again. We did a European tour in November and December.
We are right in the middle of recording a new album. We have already recorded the drums and the guitars. So, the preproduction has been ready for a couple of years, but we chose, not to release it. We have been doing other stuff, other bands like that – it is also important that everybody has the right to express themselves.
Petra: Is there a difference playing at the Party.San Festival or in your home country Sweden? We are right in the middle of recording a new album. We have already recorded the drums and the guitars. We have been doing other stuff, other bands like that – it is also important that everybody has the right to express themselves.
Kristoffer: No, I wouldn’t say! Most of the time, when we are doing our shows, people are enjoying it the same. But the Party.San Festival is very special for us, because you know, that we played the second Party.San, that ever was and we became in the meantime very close friends with the owners. So, it is an honor for us to come and play, even our new album is not out.
Petra: Setlist for tonight? Could you tell anything about it ahead?
Kristoffer: : It will be a surprise – only good songs (haha)
Pit: I have a question about your side-project “Bewitched”, are you going on with this band, is there something planned for the near future?
Kristoffer: Yes, there are gigs planned for next year!
Pit: In Germany too?
Kristoffer: Yes, some festivals in Germany, but no tour. We do not know exactly, what will going to happen, but we will see. It is only a very limited time. I do not know, what will happen, but I cannot see that we will play at festivals like Wacken. Wacken and that stuff is not interesting any more. Personally, I do not even want to play there, this is not our intention. Such festivals do not give anything to me, only headaches. But there are so many other good festivals to play. The metal music scene is still very vibrant and good, I think and we are all growing together, I think, which is also very good!

Gemäß der Nordischen Mythologie ist NAGLFAR das Totenschiff, das aus den ungeschnittenen Nägeln der Verstorbenen besteht, beschrieben als das größte Schiff aller Zeiten.
Die schwedischen Melodic Black-Metaller NAGLFAR fanden sich vor über 25 Jahren zusammen, gegründet im Jahre 1992, anfangs unter dem Namen UNINTERRED von Kristoffer „Wrath“ Olivius, dem heutigen Frontman und Jens Rydén, der bis 2004 als Sänger der Band aktiv war. Man hatte zu Beginn mehrere Besetzungswechsel zu verzeichnen, seit 1993 fungiert Andreas Nilsson als Gitarrist und seit dem Jahr 2000 sitzt Marcus „Vargher“ Norman hinter den Drums. Live holt man sich Verstärkung, Efraim Juntunen von Persuader an den Drums und beim Party.San 2019 hatte Patrik Wall von Defiatory am Bass ausgeholfen.
Die Band hat ein Album mit fast 25 Jahre alten Material aufgenommen, also Demo-Cassetten digitalisieren lassen und das Album „PRINCIPIUM“ betitelt. Darauf zu hören ist eine Reise zurück zu den Anfängen, eine Art Revival zum Old-School Schweden Black Metal der 90er Jahre, unbedingt zu empfehlen.
Live zu sehen sind sie im kommenden Jahr z.B. auf einem sehr coolen kleineren Festival, nämlich dem BAVARIAN BATTLE OPEN AIR, das vom 22.5.-23.5.2020 in Kirchdorf bei Haag (Oberbayern) stattfinden wird.
