"Desert of Absurdity" is very much the overture of "Cairn." Not only does it give you a fair sampling musically of what to expect over the course of the next hour in a concise fashion, it also sets the stage thematically, establishing the premise of this absurd exploration. The desert of absurdity is where you find yourself once you've come to terms with reality: that mankind cannot but seek meaning in a chaotic universe, devoid of ultimate purpose. This cognitive dissonance, the basis of a life lived in truth, can be extremely intense and disheartening. The unbearable heat and vastness of this desert, full of tempting mirages, compel you to make your way through or succumb to lies and death.
